This is an abrupt change, rather than a continuous change of meaning (eg. "cat" doesn't gradually change in meaning to "bat", but changes abruptly in meaning at some point. Use pictures/drawings/photos to make a book or sequence of events and make up a story about the pictures. Signs close to the body indicate events that happened recently or will happen soon, while signs further out indicate events that either happened long ago in the past or will happen further in the future.

This was thought to trace back to the first people of the land, who traveled from Massachusetts and carried this genetic deafness with them. The three words are not related to one another in meaning, only in form. Really nice post up at Receding Hairline regarding the finer points of symbols that everyone tries to use correctly but almost never succeeds. However, losing the distinction between definite and indefinite form was sometimes a disadvantage, leading to compromises in the form of the other two strategies described.

Vicars: You can directionalize many different verbs. Click every balloon that has a pronoun in it. Congo–used in Latin America for a term for a black man/woman, presumably stemming from the country Congo. Ñame–a Spanish word for yam. cachimbo/a–used for pipe in Latin America, a term for a poor man/woman in the Caribbean, and solider in the Andes. That is, if sign language processing tasks can be carried out by areas of cortex that are presumably innately predisposed (if they are) to do auditory processing, then the former competence must be being learned in the absence of inborn constraints or knowledge that are specific to that task.

Like everyone else, I love the Minions in the Despicable Me movies, but as someone who also loves language, I wondered about the Minions' language. The communicative competence model balances these extremes. Sometimes people with very short English names, such as "Ann" or "Lee", or ones that flow easily, such as "Larry", may never acquire a name sign, but may instead be referred to with finger-spelling. Several California missions, like Carmel and Santa Barbara, also ended up with stone churches. This shows the close relationship ASL has had with English; much like English has many load words from French (restaurant; clique) that help make word/meaning distinctions that English originally didn't make.
