Chopin wrote two piano concertos in which the orchestra is very much relegated to an accompanying role. In a concerto, the tutti first plays through the exposition, then the piano comes in, and the same themes are repeated, but not necessarily in the same order. I do love Rachmaninov and probably would have given his 2nd Piano Concerto the top, until I heard this piece in concert for the first time several years ago. It has been said that these works ?play themselves?, but when you hear the right artists making it sound easy, you know a great deal of thought and effort have gone in to make it sound this way. Let's listen now to the whole thing, in what I'm calling an "all-Rubinstein performance," assembled from his first three recordings of the piece.
