Some scholars and musicians argue that this is Bruckner's greatest symphonic accomplishment (and again, I disagree). This is certainly not because Bruckner’s music is much better than other music but is more because his music is so different. Wand and Karajan had little in common but their last readings are not dramatically dissimilar in overall approach. Gustav Mahler, who called Bruckner his "forerunner", attended the conservatory at this time (Walter n.d.). His heartfelt, folk-like themes are as Mahlerian as his sardonic cacophonies, whose lightning apparitions render all the darker the night of his musical landscape. In this symphony, the scherzo comes second and is (as always) not really worth discussing. There have been many fine Bruckner recordings made over the years: Furtw�ngler, Karajan, Wand, Jochum, B�hm and Giulini come to mind. The work was first performed in Vienna under Richter in 1892 and was an immediate success. During his stay there he was to produce some of his well-known works including the famous Cello Concerto in Bm, a Violin Concerto for Brahms' friend Joachim, the "American Quartet" and his "New World Symphony" which seems to quote four notes from the spiritual Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. But what I am searching for is not "authenticity" in the way this term is usually understood.
