Containers (representing the variable of "unknown") and counting objects (representing integers) -e.g. paper dessert plates & beans, small clear plastic beverage cups 7 counting chips, playing cards & candy pieces, etc. I was aware of the Moore method and inquiry-based learning (IBL), but I had never had an experience with this paradigm of teaching as a student. The book is in pristine condition, as promised. The purpose of the course is not just to introduce the student to groups and rings, but also to introduce the student to the axiomatic and abstract point of view so prevalent in modern mathematics, especially algebra, and to teach the student to read and write proofs.

The book by Thompson is for the practitioner. The stages of the development of symbolic algebra are roughly as follows: Rhetorical algebra, which was developed by the Babylonians and remained dominant up to the 16th century; Geometric constructive algebra, which was emphasised by the Vedic Indian and classical Greek mathematicians; Syncopated algebra, as developed by Diophantus, Brahmagupta and the Bakhshali Manuscript; and Cover of the 1621 edition of Diophantus's Arithmetica, translated into Latin by Claude Gaspard Bachet de Méziriac.

Would I be lost in abstract algebra without taking linear algebra first? It follows that if there is an element in $H$ with denominator equal $2^k$ (in reduced form), then $H$ also contains elements with denominators equal to $2^n$ (in reduced form) for all $n\leq k$.
